Designing a monogram that holds up
- Two letters are easier than three. Each extra letter shrinks the others. If three look cramped, try the two most important.
- Serifs feel heritage, sans feel modern. Cinzel or Playfair Display monograms read as established; Montserrat or Unbounded read as young and digital.
- Use the container. A circle or shield gives the letters a fixed outline, so the mark looks balanced whatever the letter shapes.
- Test it tiny. Monograms usually end up as favicons and profile pictures. Check the “Icon only” preview.

What is a monogram logo?
A logo made from a brand's initials, usually two or three letters, often set inside a shape. Louis Vuitton (LV), HBO and IBM are well-known examples. Monograms suit long names and businesses named after people.
Which letters should go in a monogram?
Normally the first letter of each word in the name: “Harper & Reed Studio” becomes HRS or HR. Traditional personal monograms put the surname initial in the middle and larger; for businesses, reading order is clearer.
Are monogram logos good for small businesses?
They work well once people already know the full name, and on small spaces like app icons, stamps and embroidery. For a new business, pair the monogram with the full name so customers learn what it stands for.
What is the correct order of letters in a monogram?
For a traditional personal three-letter monogram, the surname initial goes in the middle and is set larger, with the first-name initial on the left and the middle-name initial on the right. Anna Marie Ross becomes aRm. Block-style monograms simply follow reading order (AMR). Choose “Traditional” and type the letters as first, last, middle.
How do couples monogram after a wedding?
A common convention is the shared surname initial in the middle with each partner's first initial on either side, e.g. J·S·M for Jack and Mia Smith. Some couples use a two-letter interlocked monogram of their first initials instead.
Can I use a monogram for embroidery or Cricut?
