Getting business cards printed
- Download the PDF. It has the front on page 1 and the back on page 2, each at card size plus bleed.
- Tell the printer it includes bleed. Most online printers (Vistaprint, Moo, local print shops) accept this format directly.
- Choose paper. 350–400 gsm (about 14–16 pt) feels substantial. Matte stock is easier to write on; uncoated feels crafted.
- Order a small run first. Colours on paper differ from screens, especially bright blues and greens. Check a proof before printing 1,000.
Questions people ask
What size is a business card?
In the US and Canada the standard is 3.5 × 2 inches (88.9 × 50.8 mm). In most of Europe it is 85 × 55 mm. Printers also ask for a 1/8 inch (about 3 mm) bleed on every side, which this maker adds for you.
What is bleed and why do printers need it?
Bleed is extra background that extends past the cut line. Cutting machines can drift by a millimetre or so; without bleed you get thin white slivers at the edges. The dashed blue line in the preview is the cut line; everything past it is bleed.
What should be on a business card?
Your logo, your name and role, and the one or two ways you actually want to be contacted, typically phone and email plus your website. Leave out anything you would not want people to use. White space makes a card look more confident.
