Rules for pairing fonts

  1. Contrast on one axis. Serif heading with sans body, or a heavy display face with a quiet text face. Two similar sans-serifs look like an accident.
  2. Match the mood. A playful rounded heading with a formal serif body sends mixed signals.
  3. Check x-heights. Fonts with similar lowercase heights sit comfortably side by side.
  4. Body text is for reading. Choose it at 16px on a phone, not at poster size.
  5. Limit weights. Regular and bold of the body font, plus one heading weight, covers nearly everything.

Questions people ask

What is font pairing?

Choosing two typefaces that work together: usually a characterful one for headings and a plain, readable one for body text. Good pairs contrast clearly (serif with sans, heavy with light) while sharing proportions.

How many fonts should a brand use?

Two is the norm: one for headings (often the logo font) and one for body text. Many strong brands use a single family in several weights. Three or more usually looks messy.

Can my logo font be my heading font?

Often, yes, if it is readable at headline sizes. Script and very decorative logo fonts are better kept for the logo only, with a sturdier heading font next to it.

Are these fonts free for commercial use?

Yes. Every font here is published under the SIL Open Font License and is available from Google Fonts, so you can use it in print, on your website and in your logo.

What makes two fonts pair well?

Clear contrast in one quality (serif vs sans, or display vs text) and similarity in another (x-height, width or mood). Avoid two fonts that are almost the same; the near-miss looks like a mistake.
